using the Lord's Prayer as a guide
Jesus lays down some important principles in prayer and spiritual life in the prayer we now know as the "Lord's prayer". We often think of this as a formal prayer. When Jesus spoke these words, he give them as a set of important principles when communicating with God "This, then, is how you should pray"
(Matthew 6:9, NIV). N.B Jesus didn't actually pray this prayer - he gave it as model for prayer to his disciples.
" Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name"
Spiritual growth begins with worship.
Out of this flows this response -
"Now you must become holy, because I am holy! ". (Leviticus 11:45, CEV)
If we are made in the image of God, and God is holy, then we too must seek to be holy:-
Prayer Point 1
"Lord, your name is holy. In every area of my life, may I seek to be holy too."
"Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven"
Here we align our hearts, our minds, ours wills, with heaven's ways. Out of this will flow right actions.
prayer point 2
"Lord, change the way I think about my life. May you be centre stage in my inner being."
"Give us today our daily bread"
Here we confess our need and reliance on God as the source of all provision in our lives:-
prayer point 3
"God, teach me to be truly dependant on you. Remind me daily that every material thing that I have - even my own body - is from you and for you."
"Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us"
If are lives are truly aligned with God's ways, then right relationships will follow. Our earthly relationships and our spiritual life in prayer are intricately interwoven:-
prayer point 4
"Lord, I bring to mind any friendships or relationships that I know to be broken. By your grace may I be a channel for your healing and restoration."
"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil"
In the modern world, we are surrounded by all kinds of temptations and distractions.
Prayer Point 5
"From this moment on I choose to walk away from anything I know to have a corrosive effect on my life. Keep me safe from the work of the evil one."
" For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours. Now and for ever. Amen."
All things are ultimately for God's glory and worship:-
prayer point 6
"Lord, as I seek to grow spiritually, keep me humble and mindful. Humble in how I consider myself, mindful in how I consider you. In all things, may you be the one who is praised, honoured and glorified forever."
a creative reading exploring how the kingdom of God is like golden threads that criss-cross lands and hearts:-
Heavenly Father,
Please protect these little seeds of faith, planted in my heart.
Cover and care for each little seedling that I find springing up in my life.
Help me to sift the soil around these tender shoots for stones and weeds.
Lord, water my heart with hope and let your sunshine warm with truth upon me.
May each new plant grow, with healthy roots deep in faith and stand tall and strong.
Lord guide me as I grow, tie my new stem to the tree of life that I might not fall.
Lord, feed me with your word so that I may grow with grace into a beautiful plant.
And as I mature, let the buds appear for others to see, small and yet full of promise.
And when the time is right and the season of summer appears may I bloom and show my true colours.
Lord may this blossoming lead to fruitfulness so that I may share with others the wonderful sweetness of your love.
Lord give me room to expand and grow as I establish my place within your church family.
And may new seedlings be planted. I pray that seeds from my life and faith might spring up in the lives of all those I meet.
May I become a strong and beautiful testimony to your kingdom on earth.
Amen.
