hedge of protection prayer
What is a hedge of protection prayer? It's origins lie in the book of Job, where Satan asks the Lord
"Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side?" (
Job 1:10, ESV). In Old Testament times, for those keeping livestock, a hedge made of thorn bushes was a very useful thing indeed, for it could not be easily breached by wild animals such as wolves and bears. So when we pray a prayer like this, we are reminding ourselves that God, by his Holy Spirit, is like a hedge of protection around us, which keeps us safe from the
work of the evil one.
This page has a beautiful example of a
hedge of protection prayer, as well as
prayer of protection for marriages. There is also an ancient Celtic blessing for safety, and some more inspiring
verses from the bible on the God's care and protection.
Hedge of Protection Prayer
(a prayer which reminds us that God's shield is all around us)
Father,
I nestle into your presence, your love is like a huge wing of protection, encircling my vulnerabilities, gathering up my tired mind in the warmth of your hold and the gentleness of your embrace. Here I remain, hidden in the holy sanctuary of your kingdom, finding a home where I can be real and a refuge where I can shelter in safety.
You will never reject me, never turn me away, never let me go. I have found my dwelling place, bathed in the light of your grace, drifting with the ebb and flow of your mercy.
I let my fears trickle away, my anxious thoughts cease, my struggles melt away. I am secure in your eternal arms. I trust in the heartbeat of heaven and know that you will send angels to protect me. Lord, I am yours, known and precious, no matter how the world treats me or values me. I know my worth because you paid such a high price for me.
Thank you Lord.
Amen.
Short hedge of protection prayer for my marriage
We place our love, our friendship and our marriage into your hands.
Protect us when we endure hard times, may we dig our roots down deep into you. Raise up a fortress of faith around us, built in truth and held together with hope.
Place forgiveness and grace at either side of us, so that we are hemmed in by the warmth of your mercy.
And go ahead of us Lord, make a path, one that leads us into deeper relationship and abundance of life.
Amen.

My Fortress
The Sacred Three
My fortress be
Encircling me
Come and be round
My hearth and my home.
So put on God's armor now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy's attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.
(Ephesians 6:13, GNT)
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
(Psalm 91:1-2, NIV)
The Lord is good. When trouble comes, he is the place to go! And he knows everyone who trusts in him!
