The psalmist declares "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path" (Psalm 119:105, NLT). So when we come to study the word of God together, we can thank God for his remarkable gift of the bible to us - writings which have inspired and spoken to generations upon generations of people from every culture and walk of life imaginable.
On this page there are two short opening prayer examples which invite God by his Holy Spirit to speak, challenge and equip Christians as they read and study together. There are also two beautiful closing prayers for leading your bible study time.
As we open our Bibles we also open our hearts. May these words of truth fall upon the very fabric of our lives. Father, we pray that these ancient scriptures would come alive within us, to inspire, to heal, to cleanse, to teach, to restore and to guide our hearts and minds. Lord, come weave your words of life in us. Amen.

Opening prayer for bible study
Almighty God, as we gather together to learn, to grow and to change
Help us to move into a deeper understanding of your truth.
We lay our lives down before you and ask that you would move amongst us.
May we all feel safe with each other.
Safe to think and question
Safe to ask for help
And safe to share our lives with you, our loving heavenly Father.
Amen.
"As we open our bibles, we also open our hearts"
(the "Grace Prayer" is a popular closing prayer from the Methodist tradition. This is often spoken by the congregation by the way of a blessing to each other at the close of a service or meeting.)
